Course Curriculum

What you'll cover in HSB4U

  • 1450-1650: Exploration, Encounter, and the Reshaping of the World - Students examine the transformative period when European exploration connected the Eastern and Western hemispheres for the first time. Topics include the voyages of exploration, the Columbian Exchange, European empires, the encounter with Indigenous peoples of the Americas, and the beginnings of the transatlantic slave trade.
  • 1650-1789: Enlightenment, Science, and the Challenge to Authority - Students study the intellectual and political revolutions of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries including the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, and the upheavals that culminated in the American and French Revolutions. The unit examines how ideas about reason, rights, and government challenged traditional authority.
  • 1789-1914: Revolution, Industry, and Empire - Students examine the long nineteenth century — the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, the Industrial Revolution and its social consequences, the rise of nationalism, and the age of European imperialism. Students analyze how industrialization and empire created a deeply unequal global order whose effects continue to shape the world today.
  • 1914-Present: War, Decolonization, and a Changing World Order - Students study the tumultuous twentieth and early twenty-first centuries — two world wars, the Holocaust, the Cold War, decolonization, the emergence of new nations, globalization, and contemporary conflicts and humanitarian crises. Students develop informed perspectives on the world they are inheriting.

As parents of a student who has completed a course with Ontario Education Online we would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Ramos for his continuous care, support and professionalism. Every step of the way our son was able to receive feedback and ongoing support. The ability to access course materials through platforms like Google Classroom made learning both convenient and efficient, helping develop strong organizational skills and time-management skills. This improved the overall learning experience. Our sons experience with OEO has been invaluable, and we would highly recommend it to others seeking a flexible and engaging learning environment.
