Course Curriculum

What you'll cover in HSB4U

  • Theories of Social Change - Students are introduced to the major classical and contemporary theories that sociologists, anthropologists, and psychologists use to explain how and why societies change. Students compare theoretical perspectives and begin applying them to real-world examples of social change.
  • Causes, Agents and Technology of Change - Students examine the forces that drive social change — including technology, globalization, demographic shifts, and social movements — and the individuals and groups who act as agents of change, as well as the forces that resist it. Real-world case studies show how these forces play out.
  • Social Patterns and Trends - Students learn how social scientists identify, measure, and interpret patterns in human behaviour and social organization. They examine how factors such as class, gender, ethnicity, age, and culture shape individual experience and social outcomes, and critically evaluate the data used to describe social trends.
  • Social Deviance - Students explore how societies define, explain, and respond to deviance. Using sociological, psychological, and anthropological theories, students analyze why norms change over time, how labels and social control work, and how responses to deviance differ across cultures.
  • Global Social Challenges - Students broaden their lens to global issues such as inequality, migration, environmental change, and digital transformation, analyzing how these challenges are reshaping societies. Students apply social science research methods to investigate a global issue and present evidence-based conclusions.
