• The Writer's Toolbox - Students are introduced to the core techniques that skilled writers use across all forms: voice, point of view, show-don't-tell, imagery, tone, and the importance of revision. The unit establishes a workshop culture where writing is shared, discussed constructively, and improved through feedback. Students begin building the habits and mindset of a working writer.
• Narrative Fiction: Building Stories That Work - Students study the craft of narrative fiction, examining how published authors construct plot, develop character, create setting, and control pacing. Through analysis of short fiction and regular writing exercises, students draft and revise their own short stories, making deliberate craft choices that serve the story they want to tell.
• Poetry: Form, Sound, and Surprise - Students study a range of poetic forms and techniques including free verse, sonnet, haiku, and prose poetry, examining how structure, sound, and language work together to create meaning. Students write original poems in a variety of forms, experimenting with voice and technique and revising based on workshop feedback.
• Drama: Writing for the Stage - Students examine how playwrights use dialogue, stage directions, conflict, and dramatic structure to create works designed for performance. Students write their own dramatic scenes, learning how to write dialogue that sounds natural, develop characters through speech and action, and structure scenes for dramatic effect.
• Creative Non-Fiction: True Stories, Told Well - Students study creative non-fiction including personal essays, memoirs, and literary journalism, examining how writers use the techniques of fiction to tell true stories compellingly. Students write their own pieces grounded in personal experience, learning how to find the universal in the specific and craft prose that is both accurate and engaging.
