Prepare for Technology and Skilled Trades with Real-World Math

A practical math course designed for students heading into engineering technology, computer systems, health sciences, or the skilled trades. Build confidence by solving real industry problems with digital tools.

What you'll learn in this course

Explore Functions & Applications

Students explore exponential growth and decay through real-world scenarios used in technology fields. They review exponent laws, solve exponential equations, and model practical situations such as population change, cooling/heating, and electrical processes. Digital tools are used to graph, compare, and analyze exponential models.

Trigonometric Relationships & Solving Triangles

Students apply trigonometric ratios, the Sine Law, and the Cosine Law to solve real-world measurement problems. This unit focuses heavily on applied scenarios found in construction, engineering, surveying, and skilled trades. Students practice using diagrams, models, and digital tools to determine missing lengths, angles, and measurements.

Trigonometric Functions & Periodic Phenomena

Students investigate trigonometric functions as models of periodic behaviour. They learn to graph sine and cosine functions, identify key features, and connect these functions to real-world contexts such as waves, rotations, mechanical cycles, and electrical signals. This unit emphasizes interpreting and building trig models using both algebraic and digital tools.

Mathematics in Technology

This culminating unit connects all major course concepts to real-world applications in engineering technology, health sciences, computer systems, and skilled trades. Students work through integrated tasks involving measurement, tolerances, periodic behaviour, and exponential models. The focus is on interpreting real data, selecting appropriate mathematical strategies, and using technology to justify solutions.

Discrete Functions

This unit offers a comprehensive study of functions with discrete domains. Students engage with the unique characteristics and applications of discrete functions, ensuring they exit the course with a holistic understanding of diverse mathematical concepts and their real-world implications.
