Course Curriculum

What you'll cover in ENG4U

  • Literary Criticism: Multiple Ways of Reading - Students develop a sophisticated understanding of literary criticism, studying how different critical frameworks including feminist, postcolonial, Marxist, and reader-response approaches produce different interpretations of the same text. Students apply these frameworks independently to produce analytical writing that demonstrates original critical thinking.
  • Poetry: Precision, Ambiguity, and the Power of Language - Students engage with poetry from a range of traditions, cultures, and time periods, analyzing how poets use sound, image, syntax, form, and ambiguity to create complex meanings. Students develop the close reading skills and confidence to write about poetry with specificity and insight.
  • Essay Writing: The Backbone of University Communication - Students develop their analytical and argumentative essay writing to a high level, focusing on thesis construction, logical organization, integration of textual evidence, use of secondary sources, and academic citation conventions. Students write multiple essays and revise through feedback, building the writing fluency expected in first-year university.
  • Novel Study: Sustained Engagement with a Major Work - Students read and analyze a significant literary novel at a depth appropriate to the Grade 12 university level, examining narrative technique, symbolism, characterization, intertextuality, and the work's cultural and historical context. Students produce extended analytical writing that demonstrates genuine independent engagement with the text.
