The Ancient and Medieval World — and Why It Still Matters

This course takes you back to the very beginning of recorded history and traces the development of civilization right through to the late Middle Ages. You'll study ancient Greece, Rome, the Islamic world, medieval Europe, and more — and start to see how the decisions and ideas of people who lived centuries ago still shape the world today.

What you'll learn in this course

Foundations of Early Civilizations

Students examine the origins of human societies, from the Neolithic Revolution and the development of agriculture to the rise of the first urban civilizations in Mesopotamia and Egypt. The unit covers political organization, social structure, religion, trade, and the development of writing — the building blocks on which all subsequent civilizations were constructed.

Classical Civilizations and Their Legacies

Students investigate the achievements and influence of the classical civilizations of Greece, Rome, China, and India in areas including government, philosophy, science, art, and law. The unit examines how the ideas of these civilizations were transmitted across time and geography and continue to shape political and cultural life today.

Belief Systems and Cultural Exchange

Students study the development of major world religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and examine how these belief systems shaped societies and drove cultural exchange. The unit also covers trade networks such as the Silk Road and the role of cross-cultural contact in spreading ideas, technologies, and goods.

Medieval Societies and the Transition to the Modern World

Students examine the social, political, and economic structures of medieval Europe, the Byzantine Empire, and the Islamic world. Topics include feudalism, the Crusades, the Black Death, the rise of towns and trade, and the cultural and intellectual developments of the late Middle Ages that laid the groundwork for the Renaissance.
