Over a Century of Canadian History — From WWI to Today

This course takes you through the key events, decisions, and turning points that shaped modern Canada. You'll look at war, identity, immigration, reconciliation, and politics — and connect those historical moments to the Canada we live in today. It's history that actually helps you understand the world around you.

What you'll learn in this course

Canada 1914-1929: War, Identity, and a Nation Finding Its Voice

Students examine Canada's involvement in World War I and its profound effect on national identity and independence. Key topics include the Battle of Vimy Ridge, conscription, the contributions of women and Indigenous peoples, and the social and political changes of the 1920s. Students begin to understand how a young nation found its place on the world stage.

Canada 1929-1945: Depression, Recovery, and World War II

This unit covers the economic collapse of the Great Depression and its impact on everyday Canadians, followed by Canada's entry into World War II. Students examine government responses to the Depression, the internment of Japanese Canadians, Canada's military contributions, and the social changes that came out of the wartime period.

Canada 1945-1982: Growth, Rights, and a Changing Identity

Students study Canada's post-war transformation including the baby boom, the rise of the welfare state, Quebec nationalism, and the growing rights movements of Indigenous peoples and other groups. The unit also covers Canada's role in the Cold War, the creation of Medicare, and the patriation of the Constitution in 1982.

Canada 1982-Present: A Multicultural Nation on the World Stage

The final unit brings Canada's story to the present, examining reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, multiculturalism, immigration policy, Canada's role in international trade and diplomacy, and the social debates that continue to shape the country. Students connect historical patterns to current events and form their own informed perspectives on Canada's future.
