The Math Course Every University Science Program Requires

Advanced Functions is one of the two Grade 12 math courses required for most university science, engineering, and business programs. You'll go deeper into the functions you studied in Grade 11 and work with more complex algebraic and graphical problems. It's demanding — but with the right support, very manageable, and the payoff for your university applications is real.

What you'll learn in this course

Polynomial and Rational Functions

Students analyze polynomial and rational functions in depth, examining their algebraic properties, graphical behaviour, and real-world applications. Topics include the factor theorem, the remainder theorem, end behaviour, asymptotes, and solving polynomial and rational equations and inequalities.

Trigonometric Functions

Students extend their knowledge of trigonometry to include radian measure, reciprocal trigonometric ratios, and trigonometric identities. The unit covers graphing and transforming trigonometric functions, proving identities, and solving trigonometric equations — building the trigonometric fluency needed for calculus and physics.

Exponential and Logarithmic Functions

Students study exponential and logarithmic functions including the laws of logarithms, the natural logarithm, and solving exponential and logarithmic equations. Applications include compound interest, population modeling, pH, and the Richter scale — connecting abstract mathematics to real-world measurement and change.

Combining Functions

The final unit examines how functions can be combined through addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and composition to create new functions. Students analyze the properties of combined functions and apply function composition to model multi-step real-world processes, synthesizing the course and preparing for university mathematics.

Why our courses are different?

Ontario Teachers

All of our courses have been designed by Ontario Certified teachers. All of our classes are taught by Ontario certified teachers. All of the credits will be handed out by Ontario certified teachers.

No Exams

At OEO we understand that exams can be stressful. Being in an asynchronous environment we feel students are much better at showing their knowledge through a final class project.

Finish in as early as 4 weeks

Do you need a credit right away? Whatever your situation is, OEO is likely the right place for you to earn a credit. You can also take up to 12 months to complete a credit.
